Description

TAG Water Cannon

The TAG Riot Control Water Cannon is a purpose-built vehicle designed to support law-enforcement, public-security, and emergency-response agencies during crowd-management and high-risk operations. Built on a robust Mercedes-Benz Arocs 4x4 platform, it combines all-terrain mobility, high-capacity water delivery, crew protection, integrated surveillance, and operator-controlled deployment systems in a single specialized vehicle.

The vehicle is engineered for demanding operating environments and can be configured according to institutional requirements, local regulations, and mission-specific specifications.

Key Features

  • Mercedes-Benz Arocs 4x4 chassis-cab platform.
  • 10.7-liter, six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine.
  • 360 hp and 1,800 Nm of torque.
  • Automatic Mercedes-Benz PowerShift transmission.
  • 6,000-liter stainless-steel water tank with internal baffling.
  • Independent diesel-powered motor-pump unit.
  • High-capacity centrifugal pump delivering at least 1,500 L/min at 10 bar.
  • Roof-mounted water monitor with joystick operation.
  • Two side-mounted auxiliary monitors.
  • Foam, marking-dye, and approved irritant-agent dosing systems.
  • Integrated cabin, roof, chassis, and side/rear water-deluge protection.
  • Hydraulically operated front obstacle-clearing plough.
  • Multi-camera CCTV and mobile NVR system.
  • Emergency lighting, siren, radio installation, and reversing alarm.
  • Three-person crew capacity: one driver and two operators.

Protected Crew Compartment

The crew cabin incorporates ballistic steel protection designed to safeguard the occupants during hostile or high-risk incidents. The armored envelope covers the cabin roof, floor, sides, front, and rear, with ballistic-rated glazing and protected access points.

The cabin includes:

  • EN 1063 BR6 ballistic protection for the occupant compartment.
  • Protection tested against 7.62×51 mm NATO M80 ammunition.
  • Ballistic steel construction without aramid or composite materials.
  • Ballistic-rated windshield and windows.
  • Reinforced cab floor and underbody protection.
  • Armored engine compartment and radiator protection.
  • Protected fuel tank and filler cap.
  • Ballistic emergency roof hatch.
  • Independent double-locking system for each door.
  • Air-conditioning, heating, ventilation, and cabin air filtration.
  • Three-point safety belts for all occupants.

Ballistic protection is limited to the cab, engine compartment, fuel tank, and designated underbody areas. The rear water-cannon body, tank compartments, and superstructure are manufactured from structural steel and are not ballistic-rated.

Water Cannon System

The water-cannon system is operated from a centralized cabin console that allows the crew to control pump operation, pressure, tank levels, additive dosing, and camera feeds without leaving the protected compartment.

Roof Monitor

The electrically controlled roof monitor provides high-volume water projection with:

  • Minimum flow rate of 1,400 L/min.
  • Effective range exceeding 50 meters at 10 bar.
  • 320-degree horizontal rotation.
  • Vertical movement from -15 to +50 degrees.
  • Joystick-controlled operation from inside the cabin.

Side Monitors

Two side-mounted auxiliary monitors provide additional coverage for close-range and lateral operations. Each monitor delivers more than 200 L/min, with approximately 170 degrees of orientation and a range of up to 30 meters.

Tank and Additive Systems

The vehicle includes a 6,000-liter corrosion-resistant stainless-steel water tank with electronic level indication. Two 55-liter additive tanks can be used for approved foam or marking-dye applications, with cabin-controlled dosing from 0% to 2%.

A dedicated 55-liter tank and high-pressure line are available for approved OC or CS agents, subject to applicable laws, institutional authorization, operational procedures, and final system configuration.

Operational Protection

The TAG Water Cannon incorporates systems intended to improve crew and vehicle survivability during demanding operations:

  • Water-deluge sprinklers protecting the cabin, roof, chassis, and side/rear areas.
  • Dry-chemical fire suppression for the engine and pump compartment.
  • Independent pump-engine batteries.
  • Emergency pump shutdown from inside the cabin.
  • Acoustic reversing alarm rated at a minimum of 100 dB.
  • Run-flat system fitted to all wheels.
  • Heavy-duty tubeless tires.
  • Reinforced underbody protection for critical components.

Mobility and Vehicle Platform

The Mercedes-Benz Arocs 4x4 platform provides the carrying capacity and drivetrain strength required for a specialized water-cannon vehicle. The chassis is equipped with leaf-spring suspension, electronic braking with ABS, drum brakes on the front and rear axles, and an exhaust-braking system.

The Technology Assessment Program is sponsored by the Office of Development, Testing, and Dissemination of the National Institue of Justice (NIJ), U.S. Department of Justic. The progam responds to the mandate of the Justice System Improvement Act of 1979, which created the NIJ and directed it to encourage research and development to improve the criminal justice system and to disseminate the results of the Federal, State, and local agencies.

The Technology Assessment Program is an applied research effort that determines the technological needs of justice system agencies, sets minimum performance standards for specific devies, tests commercially available equipment against those standards and disseminates the standards and the test results to criminal justice agencies nationwide and internationally.
